The execution of the story is really slapdash. Those big blocks of narrative at the end of p.2 and the start of p.3--that's bad storytelling 101!

That this story is still of interest, and not dull or stupid, indicates some input from Cole. I think he may have come up with the plot line and characters, and then some lesser hand finished the story.

It's an interesting find. Anytime an anonymous story of this vintage is actually interesting, instead of thuggish or bland, I'm pleased.Frank M. The Grand Comics Database lists George Nagle as an editor and associate editor on various titles assembled by the Chelser studio, including Centaur's "Funny Pages," and "Star Comics."

Cole also drew at least one other "King Kole's Kourt" 2-pager and signed it "by George Nagle" in the first panel, and then signed it "Jack Cole" in the last panel! I'm adding it to this article.

This makes me think that George Nagle WROTE King Cole's Kourt, and Cole drew it. Which means the "Devils of the Deep" story was probably NOT written by Cole. Too bad! I will make a note accordingly in the article.Paul C.Tumeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05398929835829679477noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024420441109756132.post-58198342365938234582011-01-11T01:09:31.782-08:002011-01-11T01:09:31.782-08:00The King Kole's Kourt story is plainly drawn b...The King Kole's Kourt story is plainly drawn by Cole, and there are certainly things to this DotD story that suggest Cole's participation. But “George Nagel” was also given in indiciæ as the name of a Managing Editor at Centaur Publications as early as some issues for Sep '37, the very same point at which Cole's first work for Centaur appeared. Thus, I think that we have to see Cole as sometimes ghosting for this George Nagel, rather than seeing “George Nagle” as an alias proper for Cole.Daniel [oeconomist.com]https://www.blogger.com/profile/06763094285750736837noreply@blogger.com
